Gulp - Can That be Right???

Discipline: Swim
Distance: No idea
Session: Drills

An after work sesh down the pool - normally sharing a lane with five or six other people, but tionight - there must have been twenty! Seriously. A very crowded lane, and it was a matter of taking the opportunities when they presented themselves. I was essentially trying to drill what I'd done with Spans last week - and most importantly, keep that kick going so that it became a part of my stroke.

Well - it all came together! I must admit that I was still fairly out of breath, and I found it hard to still kick if I slowed down the arm stroke rate, but the kick was definitely still there. My body and legs all felt a heck of a lot more stable than usual, and I didn't feel like I was "snaking", which I had done, even before Spans had pointed it out to me.

The session was drawing to a close, so just for a laugh I thought I'd time a length. I did have to swerve to avoid a breast stroker, and indeed, one of them completely blocked my path at the end, but I reached about 22 metres in....I glanced at my watch, expecting to see something like 27 seconds, as I was expecting to have slowed down to 28-30 seconds per length. The watch said 16.84. Something must be wrong I thought, so I regained my breath, waited for another gap, and started off swimming the other way down the pool. This time I managed a whole length uninterrupted and the watch stopped at...

16.99 seconds.

Bliddy hell!!!

Okay - I was a tad short of breath, but assuming I could turn round reasonably okay, I reckon I could have been fairly close to that on the second length.

Let's put this in perspective. I have, on one occasion, managed to achieve 49.7 seconds for two lengths (50 metres). My best for one length is around 22 seconds. And yet here I was, going sub-17. WTF??? Even allowing a decent chunk for slowing down, that still put me under 40 seconds for 50m. If it had just been once, I'd have put it down to me messing up the watch, but it happened twice in a row, and a couple of people in the deep end even commented on how well I was swimming. I still can't believe it!

Okay - I think I've taken on board a lot of stuff from last week - in particular not splay my legs into a V shape (hence less drag), and keeping a better balance3d body, so presumably there's a lot less energy wasted. My kick (previously non-existent - literally) might contribute too. I guess it is possible - but let's see what happens next time!

ITB Problems?

Discipline: Run
Distance: about 6.5 miles
Time: 53:04
Shoes: 2100s
Av min/mile: 8:10

Hmm - wasn't sure whether to run or swim (or both) today, but decidd to get a run in. Planned a different route around the back of Nonsuch Park, which gave me some nice scenery, at least in the second half.

First mile my knee was nagging, but settled down well,m and it certainly felt a lot easier than the previous run where my legs were knackered within the first couple of miles and it was sheet grind that got me home. I even got to the end of Mulgrave Road in 7:20 - the fastest for ages!

Main problem today was the breathing, which seemed laboured, but then I have woken up with my voice nearly gone - so perhaps there's a lurgy lurking. Anyhow - harder work at the end, but nothing too bad. Legs feel okay afterwards, apart from the ITB area. Stopped several times to stretch them en route. Hope I can get that sorted.

Splashing with Spans!

Discipline: Swimming
Distance: Who Cares!

That well known international runner and famous duathlete, Spans, had kindly agreed to give me some swimming tips. I was exhausted after a touch week at work, and getting across town was a bliddy nightmare, but we met up at the agreed time of 4:45 in Isleworth. It's a lovely pool - would go there more often if it wasn't it such an icky place! Anyhow - it was near Spans, and she has the expertise!

We started off with a few lengths so that Spans could see my "style", and she observed that my legs "snaked" behind me, which was a comment I'd heard before. My legs also splayed out into a V shape, which would slow me down, and I was rolling too much, plus m,y arms went too deep, and I buried my head underwater. In short, I was sh1te. Spans was more diplomatic, and said "the basics are all there"!!

Anyhow - then the rebuilding process started - working on one element at a time. Probably the hardest to fix was the kick - I've always been lousy at this, and while I'm not sure it will ever give me a great deal of propulsion, it will help to stabilise me, and was important from that angle if nothing else.

Many lengths followed, working on the different elements - shallower strokes, leg kicks, with Spans watching from both above and below the water. By the end I was exhausted, but reckoned I'd made some major improvements "a completely different swimmer", as Spans put it. I'm going to practise several times this week, to drill everything in. I did have patches where everything flowed, and I really felt like I was motoring. Just got to get it all ingrained so that I do that all the time.

The morning after - and my legs ache like mad! I'd obviously been using muscles I hadn't used before. The strength will come!

Huge thanks to Spans for giving me her time to do the session - you're a star :oD
