Knees Op Mother Brown...
Friday saw me up early to go into the local hospital for a knee operation. For those who haven't been following the bear for long, over the past two years my running has been hampered by what we originally thought was a medial collateral ligament problem, but has persisted and lef to my knee locking up just before crimbo last year.
Anyway - finally it was time for keyhole surgery. This is not something that has to be done when Jogblog locks herself out of her house, but rather a procedure where they make a small hole and insert a tube with a camera on it into the knee and it also has scissors on it too to snip through bits of stuff. It's well cool, and is obviously a gadget. Even an N95 doesn't have scissors on it :-)
I got to the hozzy just before 8am, was shown to the ward, the physio (Sarah from my running club) popped in and we had a chat, and she explained the exercises. She said "I remember - you were going to be a physio", and I replied "Well now I *am* going to be a physio, I got confirmation through last Thursday!" and she welcomed me to the "mad world of physio". He he! Anyway - then the doctors came round, then the nurses, and they all asked me the same questiosn which was well irritating - I told them drugs I was on and contact details three times in quick succession. Then half an hour of reading and I was whisked off to surgery where I was sat in the operating room and then the doctor bloke came in and did comedy kung fu moves which was weird and then we had a chat and then he stuck a tube into me for the anaesthetic. I ddidn't feel sleepy so told him and he said "We haven't actually injected it yet" but then he did and I conked out. I woke up on the ward at half ten and before I knew it was beign whisked home around midday, complete with my crutches :-)
Anyway - my digital camera seems fecked or you could see a nice picture of my knee :-(. I'll work on this though as my leg looks like it's been dipped in beetroot. I thought this was some weird bruising thing but turns out it's some sort of disinfectant stuff they paint on.

Anyway - two days later and I'm moving around slowly and badly missing the gym. I can't swim untilt he stitches are taken out on Friday and I bet I'm getting lardy. Then another week and I can use a gym bike (so maybe a gentle spin class?) and then run about a month after that. It's going to be a long road back though :-(. I just hope this does get me back to proper trainign - if it does then it'll be worth it :-). Maybe I'll chuck in some upper body weights in the mean time.

what did they do in there then bear?
I never actually got to find out Benzy - they were having a look and suspected a bit of cartilage that they might snip (from the MRI) but no-one came round afterwards to tell me what they'd done.
I got some fancy piccies from inside my knee but I doubt that I can interpret them accurately!
hey, well done on getting that over with... hope you make a full recovery nice and quick:)
Keyhole surgery is pretty gadgety.
I assisted in a gall bladder op with one of the first keyhole laser ops. The salesman was in the theatre talking the surgeon through the procedure when he dropped the wand type thing. He ended up burning a chunk of liver and all the tv screens filled with smoke.
Twas all good in the end though.
xfr bear, so glad the surgery went well. hope you are up and about soon. should give you a good perspective in future about how your patients feel.
glad to hear you've had the op - and hope that it's recovering well! Can't believe you don't konw what they actually did in there!
